Balancing Your Skin

Balancing Your Skin

Sep 16, 2024

It's no secret that your skin is the largest organ you have. It's entire function is to protect your body from external factors like bacteria, harmful chemicals, and temperature fluctuation. It does an incredible job at doing those things, but that means it really takes the heat to keep the rest of your body healthy; developing scars, clogged pores, discoloration, and the like. It's your shield and it truly fights like hell.

This is why it's so important to take care of your skin and thank it for the hard work it does for you, every single day. There are multiple ways to do this- you can practice skincare at home, get facials, take supplements, eat well, etc. Your skin absorbs everything you touch on the outside and everything that touches you inside. It's so important to love the vessel that carries your beautiful soul through this life.

This time of year, when the weather is changing, and the temperatures fluctuate from day to night, your skin is also doing some fluctuation of its own. Because the main function of your skin is to protect your body from the external factors, such as weather, it's working over-time when the weather is anything but consistent. It's ping-ponging back and forth- creating extra oils at night when it's chilly to keep your skin hydrated and reversing the oil production during the day when it feels the warm sun. (The same thing happens in different elevations and during travel).

This is a very hard thing for your skin to try to regulate in such a short amount of time and this is when skin tends to feel and look more rough, textured, and dull. You could experience dry patches or extra oils and congestion due to the whiplash your skin is receiving. The skin on your scalp is no exception, leaving your scalp itchy, flaky, or extremely oily.

In my 8 years of skincare, I’ve found that the best aids for the changing of seasons depend on what you have going on in your life. So it's best to see your professional aesthetician if you're unsure of what to do, but I do have some easy tips and tricks for you all.

If you have a current skincare routine: switch up what you need to! This could mean discontinuing a product(s) or adding a new one(s) in or using less/more of something you're currently using.

If you do NOT have a current skincare routine: figure out some products that can aid you in this transition! This could mean a simple 3 step routine; cleanser, exfoliant, moisturizer. If you're definitely not a human of routine, it could also simply mean a moisturizer to bring the balance back to a neutral level.

Everyone with skin: Drink water. It seems super simple, because it is. You lose a lot of water when you sleep and dry skinned people will feel and see that in their texture or dullness as soon as they wake up. Our oily skinned friends will benefit from water, as well. If you deprive your body of water or moisturizer in hopes it will dry your skin out and reduce oil, you're doing the exact opposite. Letting your skin become dry with no protective moisture barrier will send your skin into “starvation mode”. Your skin will then pull oil from wherever it can to protect itself, creating much more oil than need be, resulting in even more oil and congestion.

Everyone can benefit from making an appointment with their aesthetician, whether it's for an hour or fifteen minutes. In that time frame, they'll be able to assess your skin needs for the weather change and point you in the right direction, as well as give your skin a fresh new start by providing you with a deep clean and the right kind of moisture for your skin type.

If you currently do not have your own aesthetician, allow me to introduce myself.

Hi. It's me. ☺️ I cannot wait to meet you!
